Commutative Algebra
Commutative Algebra is the branch of mathematics that studies commutative rings, most notably, polynomial rings, their quotients and localisations. These are the rings that we need to describe algebraic varieties, namely, the subsets defined by polynomial equations. In fact, there is a deep interconnection between Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry.
Barcelona has a long standing tradition and strong groups in both areas of research.
